Revision podcasts for IB History
by kimsonderborg ([info]kimsonderborg)
at March 26th, 2012 (09:24 pm)

Hi,

If you are studying history and have exams this Spring, I have created a series of revision-podcasts which are available to download.

There are 22 podcasts on various topics such as the rise into power of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, and Castro, World War I, World War II, the Cold War, the Spanish Civil War and the Vietnam War. Some episodes explore how technology and strategy have changed modern warfare, or give suggestions for historiography.

The podcasts are FREE to download, and there is no signup etc.

This is the link:

Good luck with the exam!

ToK presentation
by yeirhin ([info]yeirhin)
at December 4th, 2011 (08:10 pm)

Hello--

I have a final ToK presentation coming up next week. And I'm really frustrated of what to do with this.
I planned out to have an Art related topic.
"How the definition of good / bad art had changed over time?"
I asked my ToK teacher about this and he said that it was good but instead of stating claims and counter-claims,
to just give out examples of artists who had been affected by the society.
ex 1 ) an artist who has been hated during his times but is loved by people in modern days
ex 2) an artist who has been both hated during his days and in present days
What do you guys think? I NEED a feedback real quick as I'm in a hurry :D
Anyways, I thought about a main question of "What defines art?" and then in the presentation, I would talk about emotion, perception, etc. to back it up for the claim. on the other hand, counter-claim would be some sort of first impression of the artworks.. i guess?
I know that this has to be direct to the point but I just don't know how I'm going to do this.
THANKS :)

One of the topic for my paper presentation is 'Solid state electronics' . What should I do in my presentation? Should it contain the basic of solid state electronics, history, mechanism, draw backs and all? Or the recent development in this field? Or should I consider a certain application of solid state electronics and describe it?

IOP Presentation

Hello everyone, I am an IB Student in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I created this lovely livejournal account for the purpose of writing this message, though from the looks of this community I suspect I will be using it much more. But with regards to IOP... my English teacher is new to IB. This is his first year teaching IB English and he hates it. Anyway, he gave us a week to throw together our shit for this presentation with very little warning before hand, because he himself probably just found out. From talking to my Year 2 friends, they had nearly 2 months with the rubric in hand and concise instructions to prepare. One week for me. Maybe thats normal, but regardless, I feel up the river without a paddle. I am not even clear on what the IOP is, or what this guy is looking for, probably because he doesn't even know!

He basically gave us three books (Life of Pi, Heart of Darkness, and Fahrenheit 451) and said "Go now, little children, and come up with a presentation. It must relate to one of these books. It must be no longer than 10 minutes. Good luck." I feel really, well, screwed. If someone can help with a topic that fits IOP guidelines (whatever those are) I would be really happy, but anything relating to his IOP in general would be immensely appreciated.

Thank you for reading my large, large, long talk (yes, I know I said large twice). Good luck to you, fellow IB students! As you were. :P

IOP presentation help with selecting a topic
by kvigo ([info]kvigo)
at November 20th, 2011 (09:06 pm)

Hello world,
my iop is coming back and I have to choose a topic... the three books i have to work with are Blindness, Prisoner of Tehran, and Hamlet (Shakespeare). these are the possible topics I came up with to present, which do you think would be the strongest presentation topics and how can I present them?
Thank you!
IOP TOPICS:

Do you think that Blindness is an overt critique of modern society? Why or why not?

Does the experience in the quarantine provide any critique of forms of government?

What is the importance of the fact that the writer who is living in the first blind man's house keeps writing, even after he is sure no one can read what he has done?

Why do you think that the doctor's wife is the protagonist as opposed to some other member in the group?

COMPARE AND CONTRAST idea of FEAR in BLINDNESS and PRISONER OF TEHRAN (theme: nothing to fear but fear itself, fear as it holds people captive)

COMPARE AND CONTRAST the BLINDNESS MOVIE to the BLINDNESS BOOK
()how the point of view and writers style such as embedded quotes are portrayed in the movie and their effect to the book)

COMPARE AND CONTRAST use of FEMALE PROTAGONISTS in BLINDNESS and PRISONER OF TEHRAN to the use of a MALE PROTAGONIST in HAMLET.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST the display of ‘fluids’ (unbalance of powers) such as reason, passion, and desires and how they act as a TRAGIC FLAW in both HAMLET and PRISONER OF TEHRAN.

Help with hamlet soliloquy please!
by kvigo ([info]kvigo)
at November 7th, 2011 (10:23 pm)

Hello everyone!
For a grade 11 english assignment, we have to make up our own hamlet soliloquy of 15 lines. Mine is much longer, but I will ask the teacher if this is acceptable and if not, I will shorten it. For now, this is just my rough draft, it's not in iambic pantameter, it is 10 syllables per line however. It is right after Horatio and Marcellus leave in Scene 5 Act 1 and is followed by Ophelia going to her father to tell him of what Hamlet did in Aact 1 Scene 2. This selection was assigned and is supposed to be called the break up soliloquy. We rare supposed to use 5 stylistic elements; I have chosen to use a metaphor, allusion, simile, rhyming cuplet and paradox. Please, read my soliloquy and offer any advice, corrections, or ways to make it better bye improving the Shakespearean language, stylistic elements, iambic pantameter, etc ! Greatly appreciated :)
How am I to possibly avenge my
father’s death? Claudius, that smiling
damned
villain, must surely suspect.
To put an antic disposition on,
a person of such madness couldn’t be
at fault for such poor actions, or could he?
My most best method is through the dear Lord
Polonius, like the King’s carrier bird
of vital knowledge. But how to do this?
Ha! Through the most beautified Ophelia!
Such a weak soul, she will with rapid speed
report to thee father. Such womanly
obedience to the man in thou life
appears mostly in the incestuous
marriage of two beings, two satyr-like
beings. As such, I can poison thy ears
of the celestial Ophelia
with distorting words of lunacy and
looks of pity. This act will not be hard
to perform as my feelings of deep and
meaningful care towards Ophelia
are originated from truth, yet I
know I must distance myself for her safety.
Thereby, providing her a way to bid
farewell to me. ‘Tis what shall be done, I
will appear, with my doublet all unbrac’d
to Ophelia, thus getting word to the
adulterate beast I call King of my lunacy.

Visual Arts stagnation...

Hey everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my research work book! It's been three months now and I only have 8 pages finished and no project...and the problem seems to be spreading to my other subjects. I'll sit down with all of my materials and rid myself of all distractions and I still can't get any work done. Any ideas why this is happening? Is this happening to anyone else, and if so, what did you do about it? I don't think it's necessarily procrastination, and my research topic isn't exactly boring.

Also, any general tips for the RWBs? (Creativity/ideas?)
If you have anything to say, please say it!
Thanks ^_^

Hey guys,

I'm new here and need some help :S I've been scouring the internet for Math SL IA examples and I've come up with diddly-squat. The only ones I can find are on IBSurvival forums and, being a poor starving student, have decided not to pay $10. If you have any advice for me please comment.

IOP HELP :)
by kvigo ([info]kvigo)
at October 12th, 2011 (05:12 pm)

Hi everyone,
so my teacher introduced the IOP assignment today and I wanted to start it. We get to pick between the novel blindness by jose saramago, the memoir Prisoner of Tehran by Marina Nemat and Hamlet.
Not sure if anyone has read either of the first 2 titles mentioned but could you give me some suggestions, even just something to get me started because I'm not sure how to go about beginning this project.
I was thinking of doing a comparison between Blindness and the movie based on the book, or a comparison of the theme of fear: (nothing to fear but fear itself, fear taking people captive) between blindness and prisoner of tehran. Would these be good topics to start off with?
If you could give me some advice for a good presentation or help with picking a topic that would be great!
thanks ! :)

Well, I've looked through some documentation and I've been unable to find a minimum or maximum for source counts.  I don't know if there is (other than obviously at least 2 because of evaluation of sources) but my teacher made mention of 8 book sources.  I don't see how I would use so many sources in a paper so small.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Guys,

So basically my english teacher told me about my IOP literally a week before the day where we have to present.. I was pretty sure I knew what I was gonna do but when I tried to put it all together I realized I don't have crap to talk about. So basically we have 4 books we can choose from:

-Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
-Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson
-Candide by Voltaire

and

-Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut

I had originally chosen slaughterhouse-five since I actually liked it and I was gonna do an analytical presentation until I realized that I suck at analyzing and that an analytical presentation would've been pretty boring. So now I'm trying to come up with ideas for a Creative Presentation but I have NO clue as to what I can do.

Any help is appreciated since my IOP is in 5 days.. PLEASE HELP!

So how are we feeling, November takers? All my friends who did our state certificate (VCE in Vic, Aus) have all gotten their results, and it's actually hard to see them all sure of their uni places and whatnot. But hey, it'll be worth it, right? Did anyone find any of the papers exceptionally hard? SL English paper 1 was a bit more difficult than I expected...

IOP HELP!!
by jellybelly9 ([info]jellybelly9)
at December 4th, 2010 (01:34 pm)

I'm having some difficulty creating a strong IOP topic. I'm planning on using the novels, "Sorrow of War" and "The Things They Carried" as I absolutely loved both of these novels and the way the act of storytelling becomes more important the stories themselves. I'm familiar with the process of creating an IOP but I'm just at a loss as to how to create a topic that address the storytelling aspect of these novels that I love so dearly. I apologize if I'm making no sense as usual. :P any ideas?
